The concept of developmental tasks was introduced by Robert J. Havighurst in 1950. He explained that completing these age-related tasks—from infancy to adolescence—helps a person lead a successful and well-adjusted life. According to Havighurst, developmental tasks come from three main sources: Physical growth – natural changes in the body that require new skills (e.g., walking, talking). Social expectations – what society expects at each age (e.g., starting school, making friends). Personal goals – individual desires and ambitions that motivate learning (e.g., choosing hobbies or careers).
